New Glarus, a village founded by Swiss immigrants and known as America's Little Switzerland, turns its downtown over to a four-day Oktoberfest each September. A festival tent on First Street anchors the weekend with live music, Swiss and German cooking, and beer from the New Glarus Brewing Company including its Staghorn Octoberfest. Admission to the tent is free all weekend, and the surrounding blocks fill with craft and food vendors, chainsaw carving and wagon rides. Saturday morning adds a kids' craft and cookie session for younger visitors.
