The German American Society of Portland hosts its Oktoberfest at the German Haus on NE Alameda, a nine-hour Saturday festival that opens with a ceremonial keg tapping at noon. Three bands - Festival Brass, the Bavarian Echoes and the European Takeout Band - carry polkas, German drinking songs and traditional folk dancing through the day. The kitchen serves German sausages, pork, chicken, potato salad, pretzels and strudel, and the society keeps the event open to all ages with family games and a bouncy house for children.
