The VFW Auxiliary in Nanawale, just outside Pahoa on the Big Island, puts on an Oktoberfest plate dinner to raise money for local veterans programmes. The plate is straightforwardly German - brats, German and American potato salad, red cabbage, sauerkraut, assorted breads and dessert - and the post canteen opens half an hour before dinner. Everyone is welcome, lederhosen and dirndls encouraged, for a fifteen-dollar donation.
