Hays sits in the heart of Kansas's Volga German country, settled by families who came from the Russian steppe in 1876, and this festival has marked that heritage for more than half a century. Two days in Municipal Park bring booths of food, crafts and beer alongside continuous music, including Volga German brass and accordion-driven polka. It runs on Fort Hays State University's homecoming weekend, so the town is already full.
